Huu Bac │ Dan Bau, Erhu, Quena, Guitar

Huu Bac is bandleader and composer. Born in Vietnam into a Chinese-Vietnamese family, he moved to Canada with his family at the age of two. He is a student of Pham Duc Thanh, Vietnam’s revered master of the đàn bầu (Vietnamese monochord). He studied jazz guitar at McGill University and erhu at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and received further erhu guidance from renowned Chinese erhu artists Chen Yaoxing and Yang Xue. Performing frequently in Peru with Sonidos Vivos, the ensemble led by celebrated Peruvian composer Lucho Quequezana, Huu Bac learned to play the quena, the traditional Andean bamboo flute.

Between 2009 and 2015, Huu Bac collaborated twice with Cirque du Soleil, recording music for Totem and Toruk. He also recorded music for Canotgraphie, a production conceived by artistic director Robert Lepage. In 2010, he received the Montreal Arts Council Diversity Award. As a composer, he has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the Montreal Arts Council. He has performed across Canada, the United States, South America, France, Germany and Vietnam, including appearances at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

In 2013, he founded the Huu Bac Quintet, artfully weaving together Asian traditional music, North American jazz and South American sounds. The quintet has toured across North America, Africa, Peru, South Korea, China, Vietnam and France, earning multiple accolades: the 2014 RIDEAU Prize, the 2015–16 Quebec New Artist Award, the 2015 Stingray Rising Star Award, and the 2016 Cross-Cultural Music Conference Audience Choice Award. Their debut album On the Steps of St-Paul’s was released in 2017, followed by their second album in 2026.

Huu Bac Quintet │ Group Bio

The Huu Bac Quintet gave its debut concert in Montreal in November 2013, merging Vietnamese and Chinese classical traditions with North American jazz.

The band draws its members from among Montreal’s most distinguished jazz musicians. Huu Bac composes works inspired by his travels across Asia, Europe and South America. The lineup features Yvan Robilliard on piano, Geneviève Morasse on violin, Rémi-Jean Leblanc on double bass, and Patrick Simard on drums.

In performance, Huu Bac showcases his wide musical palette through the đàn bầu, Chinese erhu, Peruvian quena and jazz guitar; his technical command and expressive musicianship create a rich, immersive listening experience for audiences.

In recent years the quintet has toured the United States, Canada, South Korea, China, Peru, Vietnam and France. Their extensive 2019 China tour spanned more than twenty shows across Guangdong, Jiangsu, Hunan, Guangxi, Fujian, Jiangxi and other provinces. They were invited to perform at the Shanghai World Music Festival, where their performance earned an enthusiastic response and warm reception from audiences and fans alike.

The Huu Bac Quintet fosters genuine cultural exchange between Asia, North America and South America through a contemporary, original and unmistakably distinctive artistic voice.

PATRICK SIMARD │ Drums

Raised deep in the forests of Ontario, Canada, Patrick Simard carries a profound passion for exploring music and sound as a force for healing. Rooted in the primal essence of rhythm and music, he earned a full scholarship at 17 to attend Berklee College of Music, studying jazz composition and drum set performance.

Beyond touring, recording and performing alongside artists including Bootsy Collins, AR Rahman, Alejandro Sanz, Danilo Perez and Peia, Patrick studied under Senegalese griot Lamine Touré. He travelled to Senegal to master the traditional sabar drum, and served as music director and drummer for Lamine Touré & Group Saloum for over a decade.

Alongside recording and producing his own original music, Patrick works today as a drummer, percussionist and producer for a wide range of projects. Honouring tradition while pushing creative boundaries, he aims to bring healing and purpose to every sound and beat.

SYLVIA WONG │ Piano

Sylvia Wong is a Malaysian contemporary pianist, composer and bandleader celebrated for her singular musical voice. She seamlessly blends jazz fusion, progressive rock, pop and classical elements to craft rich, evocative sonic landscapes.

She has released two solo albums: Rediscovery (2022) and Destination: Sun (2025). She leads her own trio with bassist Marcelo Maccagnan and drummer Maxime Cholley, performing internationally. In 2017, she was a finalist at the Malaysian Jazz Piano Competition, marking her arrival as a formidable performer.

One of Malaysia’s most sought-after session and live musicians, Sylvia is a regular fixture at the country’s premier jazz venues and festivals, including the Publika Jazz Festival, Malaysian Jazz Piano Festival and Borneo Jazz Festival. She served as the pianist and music director for Malaysian star Aina Abdul, accompanying her in arena concerts, television shows and the hit singing competition Vokalmania.

In 2023, as a member of the John Thomas Trio, she opened for pioneering British contemporary jazz artist Yussef Dayes. She has collaborated with an extensive roster of leading Malaysian and international artists: vocalist Dasha Logan, drummers John Thomas and Arthur Kam, saxophonist Julian Chan, violinist Dennis Lau, Robin Banerjee (Amy Winehouse’s guitarist), and the Lawrence Wright Jazz Ensemble, among others.

Now based in New York City, Sylvia studies under Grammy Award winner Shedrick Mitchell while remaining active in the New York music scene as a session and live performer. She continues to tour with her trio, bringing her imaginative, cross-border original music to stages worldwide.

GENEVIÈVE MORASSE │ Violin

Geneviève Morasse began classical violin training at age three with the Vivaldistes de l’Outaouais in Ottawa. As she grew, she developed a curiosity for a vast spectrum of styles: pop, folk, gypsy jazz, rock, traditional music, bluegrass and jazz, all of which shaped her approach to the instrument.

She completed her jazz performance degree at the Université de Montréal in 2017 with distinction and scholarship support. She has recorded and toured widely across North America and Europe with a diverse roster of ensembles and artists, including Gen & Marcus, Lilas L’ Bon Temps, Lipstick Rodeo, Claude Hurtubise and the De L’Ile Symphony Orchestra.

RÉMI-JEAN LEBLANC │ Double Bass

Rémi-Jean Leblanc holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance from the Université de Montréal and a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance and Composition from McGill University. Active on the Canadian music scene since 2005, he has collaborated with leading Montréal and Canadian musicians such as Yannick Rieu, Jean-Michel Pilc, Marianne Trudel, Steve Amirault, Carol Welsman, Elizabeth Shepherd, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Canada and the Orchestre National de Jazz de Montréal.

His extensive international touring has taken him across Europe, China, Japan, Mexico, the United States and Canada. He has shared the stage with world-renowned artists including Dave Binney, Seamus Blake, Greg Osby, Terri Lyne Carrington, Jeff Ballard, Ari Hoenig, Gilad Hekselman, Ben Wendel and Billy Hart. Since 2017, he has served on the faculty at McGill University.

郭友北  │獨絃琴，二鬍，  秘魯竹蕭，吉他

郭友北，樂隊領隊與作曲家。友北出生於越南的華裔家庭，兩歲時舉家移居加拿大。 他是越南最著名的獨絃琴（danbau／monochord）大師範德成的弟子,也曾在麥吉爾大學學    習爵士吉他，在上海音樂學院學習二鬍，也曾受到中國著名二鬍演奏家陳耀星、楊雪在二    鬍方麵的指導。和SonidosVivos，一個由秘魯著名作曲家LuchoQuequezana領導的樂隊一 起，友北經常在秘魯演出，並且學習演奏quena這種源自南美的竹蕭。

PATRICK SIMARD - 帕特裡克  · 西馬爾  │ ⿎⼿

黃秀雅  Sylvia Wong │ 鋼琴家

黃秀雅（Sylvia Wong）是一位來自馬來西亞的當代鋼琴家、作曲家及樂團領隊，以獨樹一幟的音樂風格聞名。她巧妙融合爵士融合（Jazz Fusion）、前衛搖滾（Progressive Rock）、流行音樂與古典音樂元素，打造出兼具深度與感染力的聲音景觀。

她先後髮行了兩張個人專輯——《Rediscovery》（2022）與《Destination: Sun》（2025），並率領由貝斯手Marcelo Maccagnan及鼓手Maxime Cholley組成的三重奏活躍於國際舞颱。2017年，她入圍馬來西亞爵士鋼琴大賽決賽，展現出備受矚目的演奏實力。
